Karrenseilbahn Dornbirn: Reconstruction of the valley station

The valley station of the Karren cable car in Dornbirn is being extensively renovated. After the existing system was put into operation in 1996 and now transports more than three times as many passengers as originally planned, it is urgently necessary to adapt it to current and future requirements. Melzer & Hopfner is responsible for the concept planning, supervision of the architectural competition, technical cableway contract awarding, coordination with the authorities and the tendering of the construction work. Johannes Kaufmann und Partner GmbH is the architectural firm responsible for the project.

Technical renewal and energy efficiency

As part of the renovation, the cable car technology will be brought up to date after 25 years. The priority is to replace the entire control system in order to ensure the supply of spare parts and to equip the system for future requirements. In addition, the energy efficiency of the system will be improved: a photovoltaic system will be installed on the building of the new valley station and the braking energy of the cable car will be fed into the grid. These measures not only help to increase efficiency, but also promote climate protection.

Improvements for passengers and employees

The infrastructure will be significantly improved for passengers and employees. The entrance area of the valley station will be relocated and the waiting area will be designed more generously, which will increase the quality of stay. Renewed building technology ensures a pleasant climate in both summer and winter. In addition, a public toilet facility will be built on the first floor and the staff rooms will be brought up to current standards. A new east wing creates additional storage space for the cable car and mountain restaurants, while a spacious ticket office and waiting area as well as offices for Dornbirner Seilbahn AG are being built in the west wing.

Successful construction negotiations

The construction negotiations were successfully completed in May. Construction work is scheduled to start in October 2024 while operations continue. From January to March 2025, the Karren cable car and the panorama restaurant will remain closed. The total investment volume for the conversion amounts to 3 million euros, with one million euros going towards replacing the control system and two million euros being invested in the building construction of the valley station. We are delighted to be part of this exciting project and to be shaping the future of the Karrenseilbahn Dornbirn together.
