28 Aug Inclined elevator “Mühlenkopfliner”: Willingen makes way for the future
After more than two decades of operation, the traditional funicular at the Mühlenkopfschanze in Willingen is coming to an end. It will now be replaced by the ultra-modern “Mühlenkopfliner” inclined elevator – a pioneering project that will significantly increase visitor comfort on the world’s largest ski jump.
Melzer & Hopfner was commissioned with the planning of the new inclined elevator and the overall structural engineering design. Our focus was on clear, timeless architecture that combines functionality, accessibility and harmonious integration into the natural surroundings.
Highlights of the project:
- Significantly increased capacity: 50 instead of the previous 20 people per cabin – up to 350 people per hour (previously approx. 100).
- Accessibility: Fully accessible for guests with reduced mobility and families with baby carriages.
- Autonomous operation: modern emergency call and monitoring systems ensure maximum safety.
- Sustainability: photovoltaic system, energy recovery during braking and conversion of heating systems to energy-efficient air heat.
- Architecture: Modern emergency call and monitoring systems ensure maximum safety and unattended operation.
The Mühlenkopfliner is a central component of the overall tourism concept in Willingen – together with attractions such as the “Skywalk” suspension bridge, a planned fly-line and an educational forest trail. Commissioning is planned for summer 2026.
We would like to thank Ski-Club Willingen e.V. for their trust in us and are delighted to be involved in this important project.
Construction time: August 2025
